Letters of Recommendation / Midterm

I've finally completed my resumé (more like a list of experiences, really) that I will give to the people from whom I'll be requesting letters of recommendation. I've also finalized my list of people to ask! So, now I just have to fill out request forms, schedule meetings and get things moving. That will all probably start to happen after this coming week, which is going to be insanely busy. The plant section of Organismal Biology and my Organic Chemistry II lab will both be ending this week, which means an Organic Chem lab exam on Monday (notoriously difficult and in need of a curve...), final organic lab period on Tuesday, video project and poster presentation due Wednesday in biology, biology lab on Thursday, Organic Chemistry paper due on Friday, and an Organismal Bio exam on Friday. All that plus several new projects at work means a busy week indeed. Needless to say, I will be glad when this week is finally over!

To shadow or not to shadow...

The biggest problem with having a blog is finding the time to write in it. Coincidentally, that same thing is the biggest problem in most areas of life these days. TIME.

I got home about a half hour ago, wrote emails, turned in homework assignments (via email), planned group meetings, and caught up with Nicole during that time. Now, I need to decide if I'm going to shadow a doctor tonight at 11:15pm. Last night I got about 3.5 hours of sleep (almost sleeping in - thanks to Nicole for waking me up after I slept through the action of shutting my alarm off...), and will need to get up at 7:00am to water and move plants for a Biology experiment. If there's one thing to be said about Physics lab, it never required you to come in thrice weekly for a month just to keep some Brassica rapa plants alive...

That all being said, things will be markedly better in a week. The plant section of Biology will be over, and Organic Chemistry II Lab will be DONE. Plus, the bulk of my group project work will be done (Hooray!).

One last thing: a hearty "Good Luck!" goes out to my nephew Quint who, on the morn, will begin the wonderful journey of potty training. I still remember our "star chart" that we used to ween us off the paper pants and onto the pot... That, and the Mickey Mouse cake reward for kicking the thumb-sucking vice.

That's all for tonight. I think I'm going to get my scrubs on and head to the emergency department. A quick stop by Hope College is in order, however, as I need to print off my resume. I need to give a copy to Dr. Hoey, as he'll be needing that info to write me a letter of recommendation!

In three months, I'll have taken the MCAT and sealed my destiny.

Scary.

Naiya Photos Nicole's News

Here are some photos Nicole took of Naiya! She was at my mom and Doug's for the past two weeks, during which time Nicole and I went skiing up north (please see my last post), spent way too much time on school stuff, and went to see the Blue Man Group with my dad (which was incredibly cool). I just got back a bit ago from volunteering at the hospital, and our city has spent the past seven hours getting dumped on with wet, freezing snow. I'm not feeling very well (just tired and head-achy) so I'm going to bed very soon.

I only have two weeks left of Organic Chemistry II Lab, one of which will just be for cleaning up the lab, so I'm almost done! For the next four weeks I'll be going in at 8am MWF to water plants for a Bio Lab Independent Group Experiment, and I have a meeting Wednesday at 8:30am for my bio lecture group experiment. I don't know what it is with Hope College's Biology department and their ridiculous group experiments, but I think I can safely say that I've never wanted to finish wasting my time as badly as I do with these classes. Nothing gets learned about working with others that I didn't know beforehand, and I just end up losing sleep... Anyway, enough negativity. The positives are that none of my group members (lab or lecture) are slackers, so at least the work is spread evenly...

In other news, CONGRATULATIONS TO NICOLE! On Thursday she got her letter of acceptance to Hope College's Nursing Department in the mail! Hooray!!! She starts in the fall, and I couldn't be more proud! Now all that's left is to see to getting me into med school. In the interest of that, I'm going to bed to replenish the energy stores that I will use to study and earn money to pay for classes and application expenses! Sorry for the random babbling, but I don't keep up with this enough, and then when I randomly decide to add some text, I don't know what to talk about. I'm sure there was a ton that was more important than that biology stuff and the other miscelaneous chatter about my schedule, but oh well. It actually felt pretty good to just blab on here for a bit, and now I think I'll be able to sleep a little better, having cleared my mental canvas a little bit. Whew! Later, everybody, and thanks for reading and keeping up on my life. Just so you know, it is very encouraging to receive comments, so know that if you do so, it helps quite a bit!

Boyne Highlands 2011

I'm very exhausted, as the trip I just got back from involved the first physically strenuous activity I've had in months. Shaky, need sleep. Here's a video- nothing too intense, and most likely laughable to those of you (Travis) that live and snowboard in Colorado... Enjoy!

A Blizzard's Aftermath

Here are a bunch of photos, none of which contain Nicole because she was either A) inside while I was taking photos, or B) taking photos of me when she was outside... There are a million pictures of Naiya. If any of you that subscribe to this got notifications of a million posts, its because I had to trouble-shoot a new plugin for Adobe Lightroom that allows me to create posts from within the editing software. Had some resolution bugs to work out, but I think it's FINALLY set up the way I want. Enjoy!
