Me: "Whoa, are those more fireworks, or is that lightning?"
Wife, moving to window: "Not sure. Wait... That's definitely lightning."
We jumped up to head outside, and I grabbed my camera, which was still set up from shooting the above-linked fireworks photos. Coincidentally, the exposure and shutter settings for photographing fireworks are perfect for lightning. Thus followed a two-hour lightning viewing and photography session, punctuated by chest-shaking peals of thunder and nervous chuckles as the storm swept overhead. I packed up the gear when it finally started to rain, but not until after getting these shots. As an aside: the yellowish / reddish lightning was silent heat lightning (click here to learn why it's silent!), and was amazingly vivid. The white variety made the awesome booms while lighting up the sky. As always, click to embiggen and enjoy!
